Youth Climbing Coach

Job Description: 

Greater Heights is excited to announce an opening for a passionate and enthusiastic Youth Climbing Coach to join our growing team!  As a Youth Climbing Coach, you will play an important role in guiding the next generation of climbers, providing a supportive environment to ensure a positive and rewarding experience. 

Who is Greater Heights Climbing: 

Greater Heights Climbing is a community-driven climbing gym located in Madison, Wisconsin, that opened its doors in December 2024. We are focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is to inspire, educate, and bring the joy of climbing to the local community. We are looking for dedicated individuals who are passionate about the sport and committed to providing a safe, fun, and enriching environment for youth climbers. 

Expectations: 

  • Maintain open communication with the Greater Heights leadership team. 

  • Report directly to the General Manager. 

  • Contribute ideas and feedback to help shape youth climbing programs as the gym grows. 

  • Collaborate with other coaches and staff to support youth programming, events, and gym operations. 

  • Act as a mentor, inspiring young climbers and building strong relationships with participants and parents. 

  • Create a positive and encouraging environment. 

  • Foster an atmosphere of respect, teamwork, and inclusivity in all classes and activities. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and instruct youth climbing sessions, focusing on technique, training and engagement. 

  • Provide individualized coaching to youth climbers, adjusting instruction to meet each participant's skill level. 

  • Ensure that all climbing activities are appropriate for children and teens. 

  • Promote teamwork and communication among climbers during group activities. 

  • Support youth climbers in achieving their climbing goals and encourage personal growth. 

  • Monitor participant behavior and address any concerns related to discipline, or gym rules. 

  • Assist with event planning, special activities, and competitions for youth climbers. 

  • Accompany kids to climbing competitions. 

  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as needed. 

  • Supervise the climbing floor, ensuring that all gym rules are being followed. 

  • Occasionally assist with administrative tasks, such as registration or event organization. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to work with children and adolescents in a positive, supportive manner. 

  • Enthusiasm for the sport of climbing and a desire to share that passion with young climbers. 

  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to different skill levels and learning styles. 

  • Patience, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility for the well-being of youth climbers. 

  • Willingness to learn and grow in the role, with opportunities for growth, training, and development. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. 

  • A positive and approachable demeanor that makes kids feel comfortable and excited about climbing. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience training and educating youth climbers, or comparable experience. 

  • Ability to multitask and stay organized during busy sessions. 

  • First Aid and CPR certification is a plus (or willingness to obtain certification). 

  • Flexibility in scheduling, with availability to work evenings and weekends. 

  • A love for the sport of climbing and an eagerness to share it with others. 

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • $16-$20/hour based on experience.
